Admiral Mahan's theory from the prism of China in the South China Sea region
Abstract
This article examines the relationship between Admiral Mahan’s sea power theory and China's current maritime strategies in the South China Sea (SCS). It argues that China has adopted Mahan's principles to reorient its national approach towards regional and global maritime power. An analysis of the historical and political context demonstrates how China has developed an ambitious naval strategy, which is reflected in its economic expansion, maritime infrastructure, and military modernization. However, an inherent geographical challenge is noted in the form of the SCS's geography and Taiwan's presence, which limits China's naval projection. Despite these challenges, it concludes that China is committed to becoming a maritime power and is actively adapting its military policies and capabilities to achieve this goal.
